Port 38 Harvest Caye, Belize
We slid into Harvest Caye (pronounced “key”) a litle after 7 AM on Mar 19th, 2022. The ship slowed, then spun around to back in to the dock. This gave us a great view of our port!
The lighthouse is beautiful and interesting! What are the arms sticking out the sides?
From the pool deck I get a more intersting view. We can see to the other side of the island! Harvest Caye is a tiny sliver!
On shore we approach the island. The pier is incredibly long, and carts are continuously driving to and from the ship to assist those who aren’t strong walkers. Nice!
Welcome to Belize!
Ed’s tour for Belize was cancelled due to lack of participation, again! Whirled! But Joy’s tour is still on. She’s heading to the Medicine Trail to learn about what the medicine men and women do in Belize.
This Mayan woman is a medicine woman. She is explaining how she uses plants for healing. Here she is talking about the Spanish Elder tree (Piper Species) and how it plays a part in her medicine kit.
These are the huts the Mayans live in. They use the natural building materials from the forest.
Joy’s tour was more about taking notes than photographs, so this is all we have.
As for Ed, he just took a walk onto Harvest Caye. The mangroves are heavy on the shore. This is great for protecting the shoreline, strengthening the soils to keep the island from slowly dissolving in to the ocean.
Walking across the island there is a nice little harbor on the other side. This appears to be relatively new!
A complete line of jet skis stands at the ready. Given the average age of our ship’s passengers, it’s unlikely any of these will be used today. I’m out here after lunch, so it appears I am probably right!
There is a lovely, large carving of an iguana.
And on the ground immediately behind the carving, a real iguana does its best imitation of the carving! I was happy to catch this shot!
There is a fun toucan at the end of a walkway!
Next to the Wildlife Experience entrance, this jaguar carving creeps along the gorund, ready to pounce!
A short walk down the beach brings me closer to the lighthouse. Now I can see this is part of a zipline system. They call it the “Flight-House.”
A lady whizzes by on the last leg of this ride.
I stumble across this lineup! These chairs should make it easy to wheel folks across the sand!
Now time for some flowers! These plumeria are gorgeous and smell wonderful!
And the bougainvillea are beautiful in the variation of color from coral to pink on the same branch!
It’s a short day. We soon pull away from Harvest Caye.
And the island and shoreline of Belize fade.
Goodbye, Belize! Next stop – Costa Maya, Mexico!
