Port 08 Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
Aloha!
Today we pulled in to our first stop at Maui. Once again our tour for this stop was cancelled. Say it with me – whirled!
But the moon was dropping to the horizon as we approached the island. I like this shot with the moon just behind the peak on nearby Molokai.
Then the sun began breaking over the Maui mountains. From our veranda we couldn’t see the sun, but could see it lighting up the island beside us.
We get our first view of Kahului, with the stunning mountains of Maui very close to town.
Our tour was a zodiac whale watching tour. We’re bummed. Apparently two of the three tours went out. Ours was the third and cancelled. Whirled! So we’re gonna go shopping, and see part of the island on foot. We have a long walk off the pier. The first view was an abandoned mill that we guess processed sugar in its heyday.
We have this view of our ship at Pier 1. We have a long walk across a parking lot, through a chainlink fenced path, across another parking lot, then through a gate to the main harbor road. Not very pedestrian friendly.
This building was part of the alleged sugar mill. It has an obscure beauty in the coloration and peeling of the siding.
This is the entrance to the fenced walkway off the harbor lot. I felt like a mouse looking for cheese!
I won’t belabor our shopping experience. But I will reiterate that Kahului is not a pedestrian-friendly town. Sidewalks were few and short. Most roads only had bike lanes. It was not fun walking to and from the stores.
But back on the ship we had a nice show by some local whales!
With the island in the way I had to settle for a different sunset shot, but Maui didn’t disappoint.
And so we say farewell, aloha, to our first visit to Maui. I’m sorry there isn’t much substance here, but this won’t be the last port with little to present.
Mahalo!
